Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to the most common questions about ECU remapping, our services, and how we can help unlock your vehicle's potential.
General ECU Remapping
What is ECU remapping?
ECU remapping (also called chip tuning) is the process of modifying the software that controls your vehicle's engine. By adjusting parameters like fuel injection, turbo boost pressure, and ignition timing, we can unlock significant performance improvements while maintaining reliability.
Is ECU remapping safe for my engine?
Yes, when performed by professionals. At ECU Tuner UK, we develop custom maps that stay within your engine's safe operating limits. We have years of experience and only use tried-and-tested tuning strategies. Your engine will be safe, reliable, and more powerful.
How long does ECU remapping take?
A typical Stage 1 remap takes 2-3 hours. This includes full diagnostics, ECU reading, map development, writing, and road testing. Stage 2 and more complex work may take 3-4 hours. We come to you, so you can continue with your day.
Can you come to my home or workplace?
Absolutely! We offer a fully mobile service across the UK. We'll come to your home, workplace, or anywhere convenient for you. All we need is access to your vehicle and a power source in most cases.
Will remapping void my warranty?
ECU remapping may affect your manufacturer warranty. However, modern remaps are difficult to detect, and we can return your ECU to stock if needed for servicing. Many customers feel the performance benefits outweigh warranty concerns, especially on older vehicles.
Performance & Power
How much power can I gain from a remap?
Power gains vary by vehicle type. Turbocharged diesel vehicles typically see 25-35% gains from Stage 1. Turbocharged petrol vehicles gain 20-30%. Naturally aspirated engines see smaller but noticeable improvements of 5-15%.
What's the difference between Stage 1, 2, and 3?
Stage 1 requires no modifications and is safe for standard vehicles. Stage 2 requires supporting modifications like exhaust, intake, and intercooler upgrades. Stage 3 is for heavily modified vehicles with hybrid turbos or built engines.
Will I get better fuel economy?
Many customers report improved fuel economy after a Stage 1 remap. With better throttle response, you'll use less pedal input to achieve the same speed. However, if you drive harder to enjoy the extra power, economy may stay similar or decrease.
Can you remove the speed limiter?
Yes, speed limiter removal is available as an add-on service for £75. We can remove or raise the factory-set speed restriction. This is popular for German vehicles limited to 155mph and vans limited to lower speeds.
DPF & EGR
What is a DPF delete?
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) delete is a software solution that removes the DPF-related programming from your ECU. This eliminates regeneration cycles, warning lights, and the need for expensive filter replacements. Note: This is for off-road use only in the UK.
What is an EGR delete?
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) delete removes the EGR system from your ECU programming. This prevents dirty exhaust gases from re-entering your intake, reducing carbon buildup and improving engine longevity. Also for off-road use only.
Why does my DPF keep blocking?
DPFs require extended periods of highway driving to regenerate properly. Short journeys, city driving, and low-speed use prevent the filter from reaching regeneration temperatures. This leads to soot buildup and eventually a blocked filter.
Can you do DPF and EGR delete together?
Yes! We offer a combo package for DPF + EGR delete at a discounted price of £200 (normally £250). This is the most comprehensive solution for diesel vehicles used off-road or for motorsport.
The Process
How do you remap my ECU?
We read your ECU data through the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) port using professional-grade tools. The data is then modified with our custom calibrations and written back to the ECU. Some vehicles may require bench or boot mode programming for newer ECUs.
Do I need to leave my car with you?
No! Our mobile service means we come to you. You can stay nearby or continue with your activities while we work. Most remaps are completed in 2-3 hours, so you don't need to be without your vehicle for long.
What if I'm not happy with the remap?
We offer a satisfaction guarantee. If you're not happy with your remap, we'll work with you to adjust the tune to your preferences. If we can't resolve your concerns, we can restore your original ECU file at no charge.
Can the remap be reversed?
Yes, we always keep a backup of your original ECU file. We can restore it at any time if you need to return to stock for warranty work, selling the vehicle, or any other reason.
